NVOS VISITS WITH CONGRESSMAN KIHUEN
The NVOS team met with Congressman Kihuen for nearly an hour, discussing health care and potential reform or repeal bills being debated in congress with regard to the Affordabel Care Act. Mr. Kihuen stated that his primary job now is to protect and expand the ACA and stabilize the health insurance market. In particular, he is spending significant time encouraging citizens to contact their representatives to try to block the Senate’s Cassidy/Graham bill (which Nevada Senator Dean Heller supports and governor Brian Sandoval does not support).
The bill would repeal the ACA’s requirements for most Americans to have coverage and for larger employers to offer coverage. It would also make deep cuts in Medicaid.
The Congressman is supporting HR 3748, the Medicare Buy-In and Health Care Stabilization Act, introduced by Rep. John B. Larson, (CT-01), Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02), and Rep. Brian Higgins (NY-26). This bill would give Americans aged 50-64 the option to buy-into Medicare as an affordable and quality coverage option. The bill also offers much-needed solutions to crack down on waste and fraud.
He is not opposed to a single payer system and is open to discussion on the topic.
He is supporting the public options outlined in HR 635 and also supports HR 3620, the “Affordable Coverage for More Americans Act” that will ease the insurance premium “cliff” by making subsidies available to persons up to 600% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Important for Nevada, Mr. Kihuen is also a co-sponsor on HR 2267, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2017, aligned with Nevada’s three other congressional representatives, Mark Amodei, Dina Titus and Jackie Rosen. The NVOS representatives told Mr. Kihuen that we support anything that increases GME funding.
